refined Japanese lacquer inrō of five-case construction, decorated throughout with flowering plum branches (ume) in delicate low relief against a luminous gold ground. The surface displays a fine nashiji-style shimmer, over which the branches, buds, and blossoms are carefully articulated, some outlined with minute dotted accents that give the composition quiet movement and depth.

The curved form sits beautifully in the hand, the cases opening smoothly to reveal a clean, well-preserved gold lacquer interior. The inrō is threaded with its original silk cord and fitted with a simple, elegant ojime bead in silver, which complements the warmth of the lacquer.

The plum blossom—first flower of late winter—symbolises resilience, renewal, and quiet strength, a motif especially favoured in Meiji lacquer for its poetic associations and decorative rhythm across a continuous surface.

Condition: Very good overall condition with light, honest surface wear consistent with age. The lacquer retains a rich glow and the compartments align well.

Height: 10 cm.

Period: Meiji (1868–1912).
