Each of elegant tapering square form rising from a gently spreading foot to sloping shoulders and a short cylindrical neck with gilt rim, finely decorated in polychrome enamels and lavish gilt on an unusual emerald green ground.

The principal faces are set with shaped reserves enclosing finely painted figural and landscape scenes: an intimate courtly interior with a noblewoman attended by companions; a standing gentleman accompanied by children before village architecture; and complementary mountainous river landscapes with pines, rocky outcrops and distant hills, rendered with delicate tonal shading and refined gilt linework. Further panels depict luxuriant chrysanthemum and peony sprays, their layered petals enriched with subtle enamel tones and fine gilding.

The vibrant green ground is scattered with jewel-like blossoms and foliate scrolls in red, blue, black and gilt, creating a textile-like field around the reserves. Each cartouche is framed by richly patterned gilt borders incorporating scrolling karakusa, diaper and geometric motifs. The shoulders are densely ornamented with brocade compartments and floral reserves in iron red, pale blue and black with heavy gilt enrichment, while the neck is encircled by a dark band of scrolling gilt ornament. A repeating gilt geometric frieze encircles the lower body above the foot.

The recessed bases are similarly decorated with brocade ornament radiating around the central aperture and bear a gilt-on-black square seal mark reading:

亮山造之

(Ryōzan tsukuru kore — “made by Ryōzan”).
