Of rectangular form, worked in exceptionally deep repoussé and refined chasing, the entire surface animated by a naturalistic composition of birds amongst flowering plum branches and large chrysanthemum blooms. A long-tailed pheasant perches prominently in the upper register amid blossoming branches, accompanied by smaller birds shown resting, turning and in flight, while the lower section is filled with bold chrysanthemum heads and foliage emerging in high sculptural relief. The background is finely textured to enhance the modelling, creating a striking contrast between polished highlights and softly patinated recesses.
The quality of metalwork is characteristic of the finest Tokyo workshops of the late Meiji period, where repoussé was treated as sculptural relief rather than surface ornament. The confident hammer work from the reverse and delicate chasing from the front give the panel the presence of a metal bas-relief, with remarkable depth, movement and naturalism throughout the design.
Approximate size: 34 × 25 cm
Very good condition with minor surface wear and light marks commensurate with age.
