Of elegant bulbous form rising from a narrow foot to a gently everted neck, this refined vase is executed in luminous shaded enamels with exceptionally fine silver wire.

The design centres on a single monumental peony in full bloom — its layered petals rendered in rich tonal pinks above trailing buds and foliage shaded in deep moss green. The composition floats upon a soft powdered-blue ground, a pale milky tone often mistaken for robin’s-egg blue yet distinctly more restrained and atmospheric.

Subtle tonal transitions and near-imperceptible wirework evoke the quiet aesthetics of musen-jippō (wireless enamel). On closer inspection, faint silver outlines reveal an exceptionally refined example of yūsen-jippō, executed with the softness and control characteristic of Goto Shozaburō’s transitional work.

Silver mounts to the rim and foot complete the composition. The base bears the incised signature of Goto Shozaburō, affirming the hand of a Meiji master renowned for tonal subtlety and technical purity.
