An Elegant Japanese Ginbari Cloisonné Enamel Vase
By Noma Kitaji, Meiji period
Of slender baluster form, rising from a narrow foot to a gently rounded shoulder and short neck, the vase is finely worked in
silver wire cloisonné and finished in the ginbari technique, creating a luminous, vertically striated ground.
The surface displays a refined graduated palette, shifting from deep turquoise blue at the shoulder through soft aquamarine tones
to fresh green toward the lower body.
The decoration features arching sakura (cherry blossom)branches in bloom, the blossoms and buds rendered in softly shaded enamels
with subtle tonal modulation, accompanied by complementary flowering plants at the lower register. The asymmetrical composition is light
and refined, allowing the shimmering ground to remain a dominant visual element while demonstrating the artist’s sensitive control of colour
and translucency.
The rim and foot are mounted in gilt metal, and the base bears the impressed seal of Noma Kitaji.
Height: 19 cm
Condition: Excellent, with only a minute and barely perceptible flaw near one blossom, unobtrusive to the overall appearance.
