A superbly carved wood ingyō (seal-type) netsuke depicting a powerful shishi with its cub clambering playfully across its back, the two figures forming a compact and animated composition above an integral rectangular base.
The adult shishi is portrayed with a broad, expressive face, pronounced muzzle and finely incised mane, its muscular body supported on sturdy paws. The cub is closely nestled against the larger animal, its features similarly delineated, while deeply carved scrolling curls and finely worked fur lend movement and texture to the composition.
The carving exhibits a rich, naturally developed patina, the deep brown tones relieved by warm honey-coloured highlights on the raised surfaces, enhancing the sculptural depth and finely delineated details. The open spaces within the composition provide natural himotoshi for the passage of the netsuke cord.
The rectangular base is smoothly finished, retaining the warmth and character of the aged wood.
Dimensions: 3 cm high × 2 cm wide.
Condition: Excellent overall condition, with a beautiful, naturally developed age patina.
