Of hexagonal form, the bronze box and cover decorated in applied mixed-metal relief (taka-zōgan) with finely modelled motifs of birds, insects, fruit and flowering branches.
The cover features a small bird perched beside a basket of fruit and foliage, including gourds and other harvest elements, while a second bird stands below upon a branch with stylised leaves. The surrounding surface is delicately engraved with additional floral designs, providing a subtle ground to the raised decoration.
The sides are arranged in alternating panels depicting birds, butterflies, insects and flowering plants, together with a small vase issuing blossoms. The applied elements are rendered in contrasting metals, including copper, silver-toned metal and gilt highlights, creating a refined polychrome effect against the warm bronze ground.
The interior is plain, the lid fitted with a hinge.
