An unusual example of Meiji period cloisonné, executed in the rare and technically demanding openwork (sukashi-jippō) twisted-wire technique.
The surface is composed of densely applied, finely twisted gilt wire, forming intricate scrolling patterns across the body. Unlike conventional cloisonné, the design relies extensively on exposed wirework, creating a richly textured surface and emphasising the remarkable skill of the craftsman.
The delicate wire cells are selectively filled with enamel to highlight key motifs, including a pair of shishi (lion dogs) to the sides—one rendered in deep cobalt blue, the other in darker tones—together with flowing floral and foliate scrolls in turquoise, green, white and red. The hinged cover is decorated with a finely detailed phoenix (hō-ō), while additional ornamental panels appear at the prow and stern.
The koro is formed as a stylised boat with elegantly upturned ends. The cover opens to reveal a clean interior and is surmounted by a sculptural gilt finial incorporating a stylised rudder-like element, reinforcing the nautical character of the piece. A twisted rope-form detail anchors the finial, echoing the wirework below and contributing to the overall harmony of the design.
Openwork cloisonné of this type was produced in relatively small numbers during the Meiji period and remains considerably scarcer than standard enamelled wares. The present example is notable both for its unusual form and for the refinement of its workmanship.
The underside retains its original gilt surface with natural age-related wear consistent with period.
Condition:
In excellent overall condition. The enamel is exceptionally well preserved with no losses to the enamelled decoration. There is minor loss to small sections of the delicate twisted wire, visible in a few areas to the rear and at one corner, consistent with the fragile nature of this technique. These are not visually distracting. The structure is sound, the hinged cover functions well, and the gilt surface remains well preserved.
