Of generous circular form with a softly scalloped rim, this exceptional Satsuma earthenware bowl is entirely enveloped in an extraordinarily dense millefiori composition of flowers and foliage, executed in finely layered enamels and rich gilt typical of high Meiji-period studio work.
The surface is alive with chrysanthemums, peonies, asters and stylised blossoms, each petal individually outlined in gold and set against a continuous ground of delicate gilt scrollwork. Tones of coral red, lilac, turquoise, saffron, ivory and pale blue create a tapestry-like effect across both the interior and exterior.
At the centre, a large white chrysanthemum radiates outward, providing a calm visual anchor within the intricacy of the decoration. The absence of cartouches or panel divisions allows the design to flow uninterrupted — a hallmark of refined export Satsuma created for discerning Western collectors in the late 19th century.
The rim is gently lobed and finished with a gilt edge, framing the elaborate decoration with elegance and restraint.
The base bears the gilt signature Hakagawa beneath the Shimazu mon.
