A Large Japanese Satsuma Bowl with Dragon and One Hundred RakanSigned. Of impressive scale and finely potted circular form, the bowl is masterfully decorated in gilt and polychrome enamels over a warm, finely crackled glaze. The interior presents a dynamic and densely composed depiction of the One Hundred Rakan (disciples of the Buddha), gathered in ceremonial procession. Each figure is rendered with remarkable individuality and expressive detail, adorned in richly patterned robes of gold and iron red, seated amidst swirling clouds, rocky outcrops, and distant mountain peaks. At the centre, a bearded patriarch gestures toward a ferocious five-clawed dragon emerging from stylised waves—a potent symbol of spiritual power and divine protection. The outer surface continues the narrative with a matching white-scaled dragon coiling through golden clouds, its flaming mane and fierce red mouth echoing the central interior motif. Three circular mon —punctuate the scene, lending a rare sense of visual cohesion between the interior and exterior. The rim is bordered with an intricate geometric brocade design in fine gilt. The bowl rests on a circular foot, and the underside bears a fan-shaped cartouche with the signature of the artist This monumental work exemplifies the late-Meiji fascination with religious iconography and large-format Satsuma wares destined for Western audiences—particularly pieces imbued with temple scenes and mystical subjects.
