Carved as a compact, tightly curled cat with its head tucked into its forepaws, the body forming a smooth, oval mass. The sculptor has relied on economy of form rather than dramatic undercutting: the quiet power of the piece lies in the subtle modelling and the rhythmic, short incised strokes suggesting the texture of fur across the back and flanks. The face is gently stylised, eyes closed in complete rest, the ears laid back in calm contentment.
The underside is thoughtfully hollowed with well-placed himotoshi, showing deep, natural wear and a rich, chocolate patina from prolonged handling. The surface has developed a soft sheen consistent with Edo-period use and age.
This is a classic subject in netsuke art — the sleeping cat symbolising domestic peace, warmth, and intimate daily life — rendered here with restraint and sensitivity typical of good Edo carving, where mass, balance, and tactility were more important than decorative excess.
