A finely modelled Japanese Hirado porcelain suiteki in the charming form of a seated monkey. The figure is rendered with remarkable character and sensitivity, shown with elongated limbs and expressive features. The surface is covered in the characteristic soft, milky-white glaze associated with Hirado ware, with delicate incised lines indicating the fur. Two small apertures are formed at the head for the controlled release of water.
A suiteki is a traditional water dropper used in calligraphy to moisten the ink stone with precise drops of water. Animal-form examples such as this were both functional objects and expressions of artistic playfulness.
The underside retains the natural hollowing from manufacture.
Size: Height 10 cm
Condition: Good antique condition with minor age-related marks consistent with use. No restoration.
