A Japanese netsuke in the form of a double gourd (hyōtan), carved from ho (Japanese magnolia) wood and finished in deep black urushi lacquer. The surface is decorated in gold maki-e with flowing vine and floral motifs, further enriched with inlays of mother-of-pearl (raden) and small coral cabochons. The interior is hollowed to serve as a small perfume or scent container.
The neck is fitted with a carved bone stopper topped with a metal finial and bordered by a decorative metal collar. A metal suspension ring is attached to the side of the body for cord attachment, allowing the piece to be worn suspended from the obi.
Length: 6 cm.
Condition: Very good overall condition with minor wear to the gold maki-e decoration consistent with age and use.
