A Fine Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodblock Print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Ichiyūsai), “Tosa no Bunpei”, from the series “Nihon Rokujūyoshū no Uchi” (Within the More than Sixty Provinces of Japan: Tosa), Edo period, mid-19th century
A delicately coloured actor subject set against a pale ground, the main figure shown seated in patterned blue robes, turning in three-quarter profile while holding a small hand drum; a secondary figure partially concealed behind. The composition is balanced by an inset portrait at upper right of a male figure holding an opened fan, with extensive accompanying text at upper left, and the province title cartouche at the upper right reading Nihon Rokujūyoshū no uchi / Tosa. Signed at lower right Ichiyūsai Kuniyoshi ga with red artist’s seal.
Sheet size: 25 × 35 cm
Condition: Good overall condition with gentle age toning, light creases and minor edge wear, commensurate with age.
