An exceptionally well-carved wooden netsuke depicting a young boy seated cross-legged, absorbed in quiet concentration as he prepares for a theatrical performance. The figure is rendered with remarkable sensitivity, capturing the calm seriousness of childhood through finely modelled facial features and gently rounded forms.
The boy holds a Hannya mask at his side, its expressive features finely carved and set with inlaid eyes, conveying a striking contrast between the innocence of the child and the dramatic intensity of the mask. The reverse reveals a beautifully balanced composition, with the boy’s robe delicately incised with floral motifs and naturalistic folds.
The himotoshi are thoughtfully integrated into the design, one neatly lined with apple-green jadeite, a refined and unusual detail that enhances both function and aesthetic appeal. The surface shows a rich, deep patina, softly worn from handling, attesting to age and careful use.
Carved with sensitivity and technical confidence, this netsuke displays the work of a highly skilled hand and conveys a strong sense of character and narrative.
