A finely painted Japanese Satsuma vase by Horikoshi Seiji, dating to the Meiji period (1868–1912), of elegant ovoid form with a gently flared neck.

The body is richly decorated with a continuous figural scene depicting a gathering of immortals and courtly attendants, rendered with notable precision and expressive characterisation. The figures are animated and varied, each carefully modelled with finely detailed facial expressions, particularly evident in the elderly sages whose features are sensitively executed with subtle shading and individuality.

The composition is balanced and dynamic, extending fluidly across the surface of the vase, with no sense of repetition or stiffness. The use of gilt is especially refined, applied in controlled, intricate patterns to the robes, creating depth and texture without overwhelming the painted detail. The combination of soft enamels and restrained gilding reflects a high level of workshop discipline.

The upper section is bordered by a finely decorated band of stylised floral motifs in polychrome enamels and gilt, while the ground is delicately finished in a characteristic Satsuma crackled glaze.

The base bears an elaborate six-column inscription within a gilt cartouche identifying the maker as Horikoshi Seiji (堀越製司). The inscription further serves as a formal statement of quality, extolling the vessel as a work of exceptional refinement and craftsmanship, in keeping with the tradition of higher-grade Satsuma wares.
