Of elegant conical form, the body divided by a flowing gilt border into asymmetrical panels, one richly worked in geometric diaper patterns in turquoise, iron-red and gilt, the other painted in soft grisaille tones with lotus leaves, blossoms, reeds and grasses, heightened with delicate gilding. The restrained composition and refined palette are characteristic of the Kyoto Kinkōzan studio’s painterly aesthetic in the late Meiji period.
