Of elegant rounded form with short neck and domed cover, the surface richly decorated in gilt and polychrome enamels with large, fully detailed butterflies drifting across the body, reserved against an exceptionally dense ground of minute stylised moth silhouettes known as the chō no ji (butterfly-script) pattern.

The butterflies are rendered with intricate geometric and foliate detailing in black, blue, iron-red and gilt, their wings carefully articulated with diaper, scroll and dot work, creating a striking contrast against the lively, textile-like field beneath. Smaller dragonflies and moths animate the space between, enhancing the sense of movement across the surface.

The cover repeats the same decoration, while the interior of the lid is delicately painted with a single gilt butterfly among further insects on a crackled ivory ground. The jar rests on its original carved wooden stand.

Height: 15 cm.

Condition: Very good overall. Minor wear to gilding consistent with age. No cracks or restorations observed. Stand with expected age wear.
