Of gently rounded form, this finely potted Satsuma bowl is exquisitely decorated with a lyrical arrangement of butterflies in flight, rendered in delicate polychrome enamels and heightened with subtle gilding. The butterflies—each individually detailed and varied in pose—float across the creamy crackled ground, creating a sense of lightness and movement rarely achieved in Satsuma ware.
The restrained composition is notable for its refinement: the motifs are intentionally spaced, allowing the surface to breathe and giving the decoration an unusual elegance and calm, in contrast to the more densely worked “thousand butterfly” designs often seen. The painter’s hand is confident and refined, with fine line work, gentle shading, and sensitive use of colour throughout.
The interior is framed by a softly scalloped rim, while the reverse bears a neatly applied Sōzan (宗山) signature, confirming attribution to this respected workshop.
