Of circular form, finely painted in overglaze enamels and gilt with a naturalistic scene of three turtles moving through grasses and flowering plants, the composition enriched with sprays of peony, reeds, and delicate blue blossoms. The rim is framed by shaped gilt cartouches reserved with formal floral diaper patterns, creating a refined contrast between decorative geometry and the naturalistic central scene.

The reverse decorated in gilt with stylised phoenix motifs and bearing a fan-shaped cartouche mark reading Dai Nippon Kutani sei (Great Japan, made in Kutani), typical of Meiji period export wares of superior quality.

The painting displays the characteristic softness and observational quality of late 19th century Kutani work, combining botanical sensitivity with symbolic imagery, as turtles represent longevity and endurance in Japanese iconography.

Size: 24 cm diameter.

Condition: Very good antique condition with light wear to the gilt commensurate with age.
