Of large circular form, finely worked in gold wire of varying gauges on a turquoise-blue enamel ground.

The interior is decorated with an asymmetrical naturalistic composition of chrysanthemums in graduated tones of white, pale pink, lilac, orange and yellow, amidst densely worked foliage in shades of green, brown and grey-blue, with a small bird resting below. Slender bamboo canes intersect the composition, the flowers and foliage finely delineated and enriched with subtle tonal gradation throughout.

The rim is enclosed by a narrow formal border of repeating stylised motifs in cream, red, brown and pale lavender enamels, outlined in gold wire, and finished with a gilt-metal rim.

The reverse is enamelled in cobalt blue, densely worked with continuous spiral gold-wire decoration around the outer field, the recessed centre with repeated crescent-form wire motifs and enclosed by a gilt-metal band.

The sophisticated naturalism, asymmetrical composition and painterly handling of the enamels are stylistically associated with the work of Namikawa Sosuke and his circle.

Dimensions: 30.5 cm diameter; 3.5 cm high.

Condition: Excellent overall condition. No significant damage or restoration observed.
