A fine hexagonal cloisonné enamel box decorated on a deep mirror-black ground with a graceful composition of flying geese above autumn foliage. The birds are rendered with delicate silver wire and softly shaded enamels, creating a sense of movement against the glossy dark surface.
The sides are decorated with flowering plants and grasses in subdued tones, forming a quiet seasonal landscape that continues around the body of the box. The highly polished black enamel reflects light beautifully, a characteristic feature associated with refined Kyoto cloisonné produced during the late nineteenth century.
The interior reveals the copper body with natural firing tones, while the lid is neatly fitted within a gilt metal rim.
The restrained composition, very fine wirework, and mirror-black ground recall the elegant decorative language associated with Kyoto workshops and particularly the aesthetic manner of Namikawa Yasuyuki.
