Of elegant ovoid form rising to a short neck with gilt metal rims, finely worked on a rich iron-red enamel ground with butterflies in flight amongst delicate flowering stems and leafy tendrils. The insects are rendered in softly shaded enamels of pale blue, green, cream and black, their wings articulated with fine gold wires and dotted ornament, creating a lively sense of movement across the surface.
The surrounding foliage is composed of slender scrolling stems and small white blossoms, arranged in a light and rhythmic composition characteristic of Kyoto cloisonné workshops of the late Meiji period. The restrained scale and decorative clarity reflect the refined ornamental aesthetic associated with pieces produced for the Kyoto export trade.
