A Fine Japanese Bronze Manju Netsuke with Shishi and Peony, Meiji period

Of circular manju form, cast and finely chased in high relief with two animated shishi amongst scrolling peony branches and foliage, their expressive faces and swirling manes rendered with lively detail. The composition is deeply worked against a textured ground, with subtle parcel-gilt highlights to the eyes and floral centres, creating contrast and movement across the dark patinated surface.

The reverse fitted with a metal loop and central ring, the bronze showing a rich, naturally worn patina consistent with age and handling.
